Find out if anything is worrying your child

Before school starts, it’s best to have a conversation with your child about their expectations about school. Find out what your little one is looking forward to as well as anything they may feel worried about. Listen and empathize with children, and let them know that these feelings are normal. Address their concerns and offer reassurance that they’ll be safe. Let them know school is a fun place. Offer encouragement, and tell your little one how proud you are of how brave they are.

Saying “Please” and “Thank you”

Saying “Please” and “Thank you” are two basic manners parents should teach their kids from an early age. When we say “Thank you,” it shows that we appreciate what someone has done for us. It’s also important to make sure your little one also practices saying “Please” when he or she asks for something. It’s a good idea to practice both of these frequently at home.

For example, when requesting a glass of water, remind your child to say, “Please” upon request, and “Thank you” after receiving the water. Model the same behavior yourself so that your child will be more likely to follow suit. 

Asking permission before taking something

Another important thing for children to learn is asking permission before taking something. Children need to understand that they shouldn’t take anything that doesn’t belong to them. Whether they wish to borrow a toy from a peer or borrow a sibling’s bag, children need to know that it’s not acceptable to take items without the consent of the owner. Not only does asking permission first show respect for another person’s belongings, but it will also help your little one avoid unnecessary conflict.

Saying “I’m sorry” when they make a mistake

We all make mistakes from time to time. It’s important that children are taught how to give a genuine apology when they hurt someone or make a mistake.  Learning how to say they’re sorry teaches kids about the importance of empathy. At the same time, apologizing also teaches children how to take responsibility for their actions. 

Additionally, teach your child about the types of circumstances in which these words may apply. Children need to understand that it’s not permissible for them to deliberately throw their toys on the floor and say “I’m sorry” afterward. We want them to develop a sense of accountability and responsibility for their actions, especially when these actions affect others. 

Respecting our elders

Make family meals a priority in your household. Try to share a meal together as a family at least once a day, if possible. Breakfast-time is usually rushed as everybody is busy getting ready for work and school, and having lunch together is often not possible. Try to have dinner together every night as much as possible. Make family meals during the weekend count. You can even make meals more exciting by getting the kids involved in the planning and food preparation. 

Practice regular handwashing

The simple act of handwashing can spare both adults and children from a host of sickness-causing viruses and germs. When children wash their hands frequently, It helps protect them from common colds, coughs, and other infections they can contract outside the home. 

Be sure to introduce handwashing to your child early on. If you haven’t already, start now. Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than you think. Start by teaching your child about the importance of proper and regular handwashing. Use simple terms to explain why they should wash their hands often. Emphasize situations in which they need to wash their hands. Remind kids that they need to remember to wash their hands after playing outside when they come home from school and so on, and of course before and after meals.

Ensure that children eat well-balanced meals

Eating enough fruits and vegetables is so important, especially for growing children. Fruits and vegetables contain many nutrients that are essential to a healthy human diet, such as fiber, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and other important vitamins like vitamin A (which helps maintain visual function by aiding in the development of eyesight.) Incorporating fruits and vegetables into your family’s meals and snacks is imperative to not only maintaining health but also for the prevention of certain diseases (like cancer or diabetes.)

Sometimes, getting kids to eat nutritious foods is easier said than done. Many kids prefer meats like chicken or sausages. As a parent, look for ways to encourage your kids to eat a variety of healthy foods. Consider injecting a little creativity when you serve fruits and vegetables. Combine foods of different colors, and cut them into fun shapes and sizes to make them more appetizing. 

Prioritize sleep

Quality sleep is paramount when it comes to making sure kids stay healthy, both physically and mentally.  Be sure to prioritize sleep in your family. Establish a consistent bedtime routine for your little one, and make sure to stick to it nightly, including the weekends, whenever possible. Limit your children’s screen time at least an hour before bedtime. Instead, incorporate sleep-inducing activities into your kids’ bedtime routine, such as reading bedtime stories that help your child get in the mood for sleep. 

More importantly, remember to set a good example with your own actions. If you want to highlight the importance of getting adequate sleep for your kids, be sure to set a good example with your own sleep habits. Don’t tell kids that they can’t stay up late when they see you spending hours late at night binge-watching your favorite series.

Provide children with the resources they need

Providing kids with the resources needed for creative expression goes beyond giving them art supplies or a space in which to work. It also means giving them adequate time and opportunities for unstructured and imaginative play, with less adults-led instruction.

Allow time for your little one to enjoy independent and free play. To do this, be sure to limit the hours he or she spends on electronic devices and staring at screens. Surround your child with toys and materials that are more likely to spark imagination. Encourage little ones to build something from scratch. Let them paint using any material they want. Or let them play dress up,  play make-believe, and more!

Allow room for spontaneity and freedom

Another way to help creativity grow and flow with children is to encourage them to be spontaneous. There’s no need to instill structure in everything they do, and not everything has to be carefully planned. 

For example, if children want to color outside the outlines in a coloring book, let them do so. If they want to use multiple colors on their masterpiece, or experiment with a variety of materials, let them. 

It’s okay to allow  extra room for your child to be spontaneous. It’s healthy for little ones to be given the freedom to express whatever they feel at the moment and act on their creative thoughts. Allow them to exercise their autonomy as they express their ideas, as long as it doesn’t compromise their safety. 

Encourage children to ask questions

Does your little one have a habit of asking seemingly random questions? Is he or she very curious? If so, continue to encourage that sense of wonder! No matter how random, vast, or small,  it’s important that we try to answer their questions. When kids ask questions, it means that they want to learn more and find out more about the world around them. Curious kids want to understand things more clearly, and questioning is their means of discovery.

Don’t discourage them from asking questions just because you don’t know the answer, or you find it hard to explain certain things. In fact, it’s important to continue to spark their curiosity. You can also encourage their sense of wonder by asking some questions yourself. For example, you may ask your child why he or she thinks the sky is blue, or why there is night and day. 

Don’t pressure your child

It’s common for parents to want their kids to excel. While it’s natural for us to want our children to be the best they can be, it’s also imperative that we resist putting pressure on them if we want to foster creativity. Make sure your child doesn’t feel the need to impress anyone. Let children do things from the heart. After all, creativity is all about freedom of expression.
